Antique Handcarved Wooden Snuff Box

Hand carved antique wooden 'SNUFF' box with sliding top. The habit of snuff taking dates back to the colonial period of America. Snuff was a powdered form of tobacco that needed to be kept moist because it had a tendency to dry out and hard to keep fresh. Snuff boxes were air tight containers developed to keep the tobacco fresh and typically made from wood, horn, silver or even paper mache. At one point snuff boxes became the must-have accessory for royalty and upper classes so lower cost versions made from wood became readily available for the masses.

How we'd style: as part of decor and books on a shelf dedicated to folk art and Americana, on top of a stack of books in the dining room or living room as a conversation starter when company comes over (you know inevitably someone is going to ask you what a Snuff Box is).

In great vintage condition. Some areas of wear and discoloration from age and use (as shown in photos).

Measures approximately 29.5"HX10.5"W.
